PGY1401C Materials List

Welcome to PGY1401C Intro to Photography Class. Most students find this to be a very enjoyable class, but this is an 'old-school' black and white wet-lab class and you will need certain materials by specific dates in order to be successful. Keep up with the work in a timely fashion and you will be successful.

SESSION 1) You will need a 3-ring binder with 25 full-page clear sheet protectors. Here is a link to a sample product (you do not need this specific product, only something similar):

SESSION 2) You will need 8x10 photo paper. NOTE: Inkjet paper, such as Epson paper, will NOT work. Your photo paper should be
1.) resin-coated
2.) multi-grade
3.) variable contrast
4.) 8x10 size
5.) and glossy works best, although luster/pearl is an acceptable alternative if you do not like glossy photos.

Here is a link to the type of paper you will need:

GLOSSY PAPER:  https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/706799-REG/Ilford_1799178_Multigrade_IV_RC_DLX.html

OR

LUSTER/PEARL PAPER:  https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1352469-REG/ilford_1178283_multitgrade_iv_rc_deluxe.html

You will need a total of 50 sheets of photo paper for the entire class. You can purchase the paper in the PBSC campus bookstore, although it will probably be a bit more expensive than online. You can also purchase the paper locally at:

The ProShop for Photographers
417 Clematis Street
West Palm Beach, FL 33401
Phone:(561) 253-2606

NOTE: They sometimes have student specials with 35 sheet boxes at the same price of 25 sheet boxes.

SESSION 3) You will need a camera and film. ONLY purchase black and white film (we cannot process color film NOT C-41 B&W film). ONLY purchase 400 ISO film (more info on 'ISO' to come during class).

You will need a 35mm camera that can be set fully manual and not a completely automatic camera. You do NOT need to purchase a new camera - a used camera will be fine. It is possible that someone in your family might have a 35mm camera you can borrow, rent, or buy.

Here is a list of acceptable film types (you will need a total of at LEAST eight (8) rolls of film, 1 roll per assignment) and a list of good 35mm cameras. You can find used film cameras on eBay, Amazon.com, Craigslist (although be VERY careful when dealing via Craigslist), and from former PGY1401C students.

Good Starter 35mm Cameras:

Canon AE-1
Pentax K1000
Nikon FM (Nikon FM, Nikon FM2, Nikon FM2n, Nikon FM3a, Nikon FM10 or Nikon N2000)
Minolta X-700
Olympus OM series (OM-1, OM-2, OM-3, OM-4)
Yashica FX-3

Feel free to contact me for recommendations on specific cameras you may find and wish to purchase.
